Turkey was later occupied by the Persian Empire, Alexander the Great and the Roman Empire.

Byzantium became the new capital city of the Roman Empire in 324 AD, under Roman Emperor Constantine I and remained as the capital of Byzantium for many centuries.

The Turks began to move into the land in the 11th Century and the Ottoman Empire was born in the 13th century, becoming the most dominant empire in the region and surviving for over 700 years until it broke down after World War I. The Republic of Turkey was set up in 1923 by Mustafa Kemal, a Turkish war hero.

The Soviet Union began to insist on military bases in Turkey after World War II and the United States announced the Truman Doctrine. This was predominantly to ensure the security and freedom of Turkey and Greece.
