About Abridge

The riverside village of Abridge is a desirable location to move to, with some appealing large country homes. It has a number of family homes set in a semi-rural location with beautiful landscaped grounds and/or superb views over the surrounding countryside – all at a fraction of Central London prices.

The village itself has a long history and had strategic importance because of the river crossing, of which the village takes its name, and also because it lay on the travellers route from London to the market town of Chipping Ongar, eight miles from Abridge. It has a number of historic buildings, among them the medieval Coach House, also known as Hall house, plus 18th and 19th century buildings.

Commuting from Abridge

Apart from its idyllic location in Epping Forest, one of the main draws of moving to Abridge is its close proximity to London. The nearest tube stations are Theydon Bois and Debden, which are both on the Central Line to the City and West End. Many people who live in Abridge also commute to the county town of Chelmsford, which is around 15 miles away.

In addition to this, the village also has excellent road links. It lies close to the A113, which connects to the M11 that leads onto the M25 to London. You can also find regular bus services to Epping, Loughton and Theydon Bois.

Housing in Abridge

Abridge, which has a population of 1,500, has some wonderful properties including bungalows, detached homes, semi-detached houses, terraces and substantial family homes with six to eight bedrooms. Many of the homes are in idyllic peaceful country settings, which gives settlers the best of both worlds – a rural location and within easy reach of the city for work or shopping.

Attractions in Abridge

Its location means that it is well placed for country walks or cycling. A big draw is the ancient Bluebell Wood (or Apse Grove), which is approached via New Farm Drive, and is so called because of its carpet of bluebells in spring. There are various walking routes within the village itself and you can find there are some wonderful panoramic views over the valley near Lambourne Church. If you are a golfer, the Abridge Golf Course and Country Club is a 18 hole course set in 240 acres of grounds.

Education

The village has one school, Lambourne Primary, on Hoe Lane. Built in Victorian times, it has 190 pupils and is classified as an all round ‘good’ school by Ofsted. An interesting fact about the school is that a bell is sounded to mark the start of the school day, a tradition which the school has kept since 1857. The nearby Debden Park High School serves as a feeder school for secondary school pupils.

Shopping and Nightlife

Abridge has a few shops including an interiors shop, supermarket and post office, café and coffee shop, florist and even a paint ball shop! In addition to this are various pubs and restaurants including gastro pubs, a Chinese restaurant, Turkish restaurant, Indian, Modern English and a steakhouse. A host of pubs can be found in the village including the Maltsters Arms and The Two Brewers, which also serves food.
